When the Light Shines Through

When the light shines through,
I can see your face
covered in tears, sweat, and grime.

When the light shines through,
I can your armor
turned red by the blood of battle.

When the light shines through,
I can see your hands
locked 'round the sword's hilt.

When the light shines through,
I can see your eyes
locked on mine, watching my every move.

They keep me pinned in place
As you slowly drive your sword
Into my wearied and empty chest.

They watch as my breath leaves my lips.
They smile when they see my army retreat.
They harden when a tears slips down your cheek.

They remember the times of old, those days of gold.
They remember me, your childhood friend.
They remember the fun we had together, growing up side by side.
They remember the day your father was killed and I was blamed.
They remember me escaping the castle, running for my life.
They remember the oath you swore, to avenge the king.
They remember the moment you discovered I had found an army.
They remember this morning, when this battle started.
They remember the last words I said to you, only seconds ago.
They remember the shock you felt when I said that I know the truth.
They remember slipping the poison into Father's wine.
They remember putting the poison vial into my room.


They remember all of this bloodshed.
They see my body lying before you.
They are the eyes of the King.
They do not know why you fall to your knees
why you hug my corpse to your chest
why you let out the cry of a lone wolf
why you reach for a dagger
why you look to the sky
why you drive the blade into your heart

They can not see the fact that we were brothers and you never wanted this for either of us.
